All women and children have the fundamental right to live free from fear and violence.Auckland Women's Refuge was the 2nd refuge to be established in Aotearoa/New Zealand and has been operating since September 1975. Auckland Women's Refuge provides safe houses and community support services including:
- Supporting the rights of women and children to care and protection
- Promoting autonomy and integrity of all women
- Providing safety and protection for women and their children
- Supporting parallel development to enable culturally appropriate service delivery
- Supporting and promoting the visibility of lesbian women in refuges
- Collectively sharing responsibility and accountability
- Supporting diversity of cultures
- Respecting lesbians' rights
- Maintaining client confidentiality and privacy
